Organics recycling firm Biogen was named Recycling Business of the Year at the Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management 2019 at London’s Landmark Hotel Yesterday.

The Awards, run by Letsrecycle.com, also saw Tina Norman-Ross from States of Guernsey Trading Assets clinch the individual award for Local Authority Recycling Champion, after playing a key role in the implementation of the island’s waste strategy.

Business categories

Other winners in their sector categories were Avon Specialty Metals, for Metals Recycling Business of the Year; Bywaters (Leyton), for Plastics Recycling Business of the Year; Changeworks Recycling, for Paper Recycling Business of the Year; and Countrystyle Recycling, for Wood Recycling Business of the Year.

Biogen also scooped a prize in one of the five sector-specific categories, after a year which saw the company make a series of strategic acquisitions.

Ceremony

Sixteen awards were presented at the event which was hosted by BBC presenter and Masterchef frontman, Gregg Wallace. The ceremony also heard a keynote address from Conservative MP for Tiverton and Honiton, Neil Parish, who is chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee.

Neil Parish MP called for a collaborative approach to tackling environmental issues in his keynote address

Addressing delegates at the event, Mr Parish acknowledged the “great work” which the industry does and called for a collaborative approach to tackling environmental issues.

“We have to now get together and work practically to deliver a better environment,” he said. “When all of you are recycling and in all the good work that you do, let’s make sure it’s proper recycling, let’s make sure it does deliver better things for the environment.

“The most fascinating argument of all is that we have to change our lifestyles in order to change the planet.”

Triumph

In terms of waste facilities, a household waste and recycling centre in Surrey, operated by Suez, triumphed in the category for Civic Amenity Site of the Year. Meanwhile, Stericycle BioSystems clinched the prize for Best Use of Design and Technology in a Waste Management Facility.

And, a crew from West Devon borough council took the top spot for the Collection Crew of the Year, after what has been noted as a great service performance in 2018.

A small WEEE retail doorstep collection by Dixons Carphone Plc; the Foil for Snappy, York, initiative which collects aluminium for recycling and raises money for charity; and a campaign in the London borough of Lewisham aimed at cutting contamination, were three recycling initiatives to secure awards in their respective categories.

Rothschild & Co with the BPR Group won the Zero Waste Platinum Award and Dell EMC scooped an award for Circular Economy Success for its Bezel2Bezel closed-loop plastic initiative.

Winners on the day also included Smith’s (Gloucester) for Waste Transfer and Skip Hire Business of the Year in what judges described as a “very competitive category”.
