Ceremony

Sixteen awards were presented at the event which was hosted by presenter and mathematician Rachel Riley, with a keynote address from Barry Sheerman, MP for Huddersfield, a founding member of the All Party Sustainable Resource Group and a former chair of the Education and Skills Select Committee.

Opening the awards ceremony, Rachel Riley said: “I’m delighted to be here today. I couldn’t have been asked to do this at a more pertinent time because waste and recycling management is definitely having a ‘moment’.”

“Businesses and individuals alike are taking notice and the tide is turning the right direction.”

She said that Blue Planet 2 has had a big on the way the public and key decision makers in the UK are looking at the problem of the plastics pollution. “And it’s making us more concerned about the bigger questions of how we should deal with our waste in general and whether we need to create the amount of waste that we’re doing so.”

“I congratulate everyone here nominated today. It’s a wonderful occasion which allows us to focus on the spread of achievements by all the awards finalists, and the old cliché is true, you are all winners to come this far so very well done.”
